How to read a ceramic coating quote
You will find coatings advertised in DFW for under $500 with a ten year promise on them. Nobody prices a longer lasting product below a shorter lasting one. Here are the five questions that tell you what you are actually buying, and you should ask us the same ones.
1. How long has the shop existed?
A two year old company selling a ten year coating is promising you five times more than it has been alive. It has no way to know how that product performs in year six, because it has never watched a car get there. Most small businesses do not make it past three years, and a warranty is only worth something if somebody is still answering the phone.
We have been doing this for three years. We only offer a true 5 year Manett’s coating, and we warranty it for a full five years. The coatings we installed when we started are still performing beautifully on the cars we maintain, and those customers know they can call us if their coating clogs or just acts weird.
2. Who makes the product, and can anyone buy it?
Ask for the brand and then go look it up. If you can add it to a cart yourself in two clicks, you are paying installation rates for a product you could have bought off a shelf. “Professional grade” on a bottle available to the public means prosumer grade.
We install Manett’s. The true 5 year formulation is only released to sponsored installers, so it is not something you or the shop down the road can order.
3. Who is actually backing the warranty?
Most coating warranties in this market are written by the installer, not the manufacturer. That means the terms, the exclusions and the payout are whatever that shop decides on the day you call. Ask whether the warranty is registered with the manufacturer, what voids it, and what happens if the shop closes.
4. Does it need a topper?
This is the one that costs people the most money. A coating sold as ten years that requires a “topper” every two or three years is not a ten year coating. It is a two year coating with a subscription attached, and you are being charged to maintain a product that already stopped doing its job.
Ours needs no topper. Maintenance with us is optional upkeep you choose, not a reapplication fee you get cornered into.
5. How many hours is it, and what does that work out to per hour?
This is where the price actually lives, and it is the easiest lie to catch. A real business has a floor it cannot go below and stay open. Ours is $100 an hour. That covers labor, product, pads, compound, fuel, insurance, equipment and the truck.
A proper coating job is six to eight hours of prep and install. So do the division on a sub $500 quote. That is roughly $50 to $60 an hour before a single consumable, which is under what it costs to do the work. Then watch how long the job actually takes. When a six to eight hour job gets handed back in three or four, it stopped being a mystery. Something got skipped, and it was almost certainly the correction, because that is the part that takes the hours and the part you cannot see missing until the coating is already locked over it.
Our install runs six to eight hours depending on package and paint condition. That is the whole reason the tiers exist, and it is why we will not meet a $499 price.
A note on the buzzwords
Graphene, 10H, nano infused, ceramic hybrid. Watch the hardness one in particular. The pencil hardness scale that coatings are graded on stops at 9H, so a “10H” rating is a number that does not exist on the scale it is quoting. And because a coating is only a few microns thick, that test is largely reading the paint and steel underneath it anyway.
None of those words tell you how long the coating will last on your car in Texas heat. The five questions above do.

What a ceramic coating will not do
We would rather lose the job than have you find this out after you have paid. Here is the honest version.
It will not stop scratches or rock chips
A coating is a few microns of chemistry. It is not armor. If you want protection from rock chips and road debris, that is paint protection film, and it is a different product at a different price. Anyone telling you a coating makes your paint scratch proof is selling you something that does not exist.
It does not make your car shinier
The coating does not add gloss. The prep and the polishing do. Correction is what removes the swirls and haze that were dulling the paint, and the coating is what locks that finish in and keeps it easy to maintain. That is exactly why our three packages differ by correction depth and not by coating.
If a shop is selling you gloss and charging for the coating instead of the correction, you are paying for the wrong half of the job.

Our sun and our summers are brutal on paint. Real world life depends on three things: install quality, product quality, and above all maintenance. A coating that gets washed properly outlasts an identical coating that gets run through a brush tunnel every other week, every single time.
